When the light fades

Ever been on safari with the light  fading rapidly and the sun behind your subject?  What you have is a great opportunity to play with backlighting.

The obvious shot is a silhouette when the sun is low and the sky is orange, but there are  also great opportunities for rim lighting.

Quick tips for backlighting:

  • Use spot metering and choose the area you want correctly exposed (Eg in a silhouette you would meter for the sky).
  • Check your image and/or histogram and adjust your exposure compensation to achieve results.
  • Adjust ISO and Aperture to ensure you are getting quick shutter speeds if you are wanting to freeze action.
